Historical Norfolk
The county of Norfolk has had a number of castles built over the centuries, the most famous one probably being Norwich Castle, this is well worth a visit. Many of the other castles built over time also still have the remains, which are also worth a visit, such as Caister Castle and Castle Acre to name but two.

Norfolk is also home to many fine churches, as every town, and nearly every village have their own church you will not have to travel far to visit one of these wonderful buildings.
The National trust owns a number of stately houses in the county which are open to the public,also while in Norfolk you may wish to visit the Queens country retreat at Sandringham which is also open the public.

Our county is also the birth place for many famous people. Horatio Nelson was born in Burnham Thorpe in 1785. The All Saints church and the public house The Lord Nelson are full of authentic memorabilia.
Edith Cavell was born in 1865 in Swardeston near Norwich and was a nurse during the first world war. During the war she worked in Belgium but was caught helping British prisoners escape. She was shot by a firing squad by the Germans. She has a monument at Erpingham Gate in Norwich.
The author of the childrens classic Black Beauty - Anna Sewell was born in Priory Gate great Yarmoutn in 1820 there is a plaque displayed there.
The Norfolk Broads is totally a man made enviroment. Originally the Broads area was mostly under the sea.
Through time it was used as a source of fuel by the Danes due to the peat deposits found there.
During Mediaeval times the peat pits began to flood and the Broads began to form. Intially used for industry the broads is now home to pleasure crafts and the tourism industry.

This is just a small introduction to Norfolks history, there are a number of museums and historical places all over the county just waiting to be dicovered by you.
